01. OVERVIEW
01. OVERVIEW
Skin Breakdown is an application to help guide and educate users on what skincare is about. Some users are novices, while others are experts. Despite where the user may be in their knowledge of skincare, this application will help support and guide them. The design of this application was completed by a team of two and displayed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Design Fair. My role was making a survey to analyze and synthesize its data, leading usability tests, and wireframing screens to prototype on Figma.

02. PROBLEM
02. PROBLEM
Using several apps to manage skin concerns, product research, and routine building reduces efficiency and creates a fragmented user experience.
Skincare can be complex and confusing, with new products constantly being launched, formulations and prices changing, and unknown ingredients. There are already several skincare applications on the market that offer features to address some of these problems. Some offering AI scanning for skin and products, building routines, and support for shopping online. These features are available but on separate applications rather than being integrated altogether. Users have to reference several applications to address certain concerns to access the needed feature.

03. UX RESEARCH
03. UX RESEARCH
A competitive analysis was conducted to understand where these applications were succeeding and failing. I analyzed the three most highly rated skincare apps on Apple's App Store. For each of the applications, I collected the most and least starred reviews to understand what pains users were experiencing within the application.
Additionally, a survey was conducted to collect quantitative data on users' personal experiences with skincare. A Google form was used with a total of 81 responses. Many stated feeling overwhelmed with what products to use and unsure of how to start.

04. GOALS
04. GOALS
Design an application that will enhance product discovery and help users manage skin care concerns to improve user experience and efficiency.
Based on our research, we aim to design an application that will unify the experiences provided from other application while addressing user pain points identified through surveys.

USER FLOW
USER FLOW
A user flow was created to illustrate the intended navigation a user takes to check product compatibility, helping determine which screens to prioritize in wireframing.

A fully functional mobile prototype incorporating research insights and design improvements informed by usability results.
The mobile application layout uses clear separation, with drop-down boxes and buttons to switch between information, minimizing cognitive load. A clear navigation allows users to quickly move between routine management, product discovery, and compatibility checks seamlessly.

07. RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS
07. RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS
The final design of Skin Breakdown directly addresses the key pain points identified during usability testing and incorporates research insights to enhance the user experience. Multiple design iterations refined the hi-fidelity prototype, improving navigation and task efficiency. Information was strategically segmented to reduce cognitive load, making the questionnaire easy to complete. The prototype allows users to build routines, assess product compatibility, explore ingredients, and track skin progress through scanning.
This project strengthened my skills in user-centered design, particularly in managing high volumes of information across multiple features. I learned how to prioritize content through clear information hierarchy, ensuring the most important elements were places first in a way that felt intuitive to users. Through collaboration with my teammate and insights gathered from research, we iterated multiple times but did not include a usability test after the final prototype. This would be an additional step that would support our design further.
